How do scientists know what they know? This unit is all about gathering evidence to determine the nature of things we can't see. Students begin by making inferences about the contents of sealed milk cartons and model what's inside. They apply these reasoning skills to investigate the nature of solids, liquids and gases. Your class will learn to view their world as a collection of atoms and molecules in constant thermal motion. Not because they are told this is so. Rather, a wide variety of phenomena - diffusion, expansion, contraction, evaporation, condensation, melting, freezing and boiling all suggest that this is the best predictive model.
