This book is a perfect sequel to Measuring Length. It continues with the study of area, volume and mass and the metric units that measure these quantities. Your students will investigate metric relationships by building metric models and fitting them together. On an improvised microbalance they'll discover that their cubic centimeter model holds 1 ml of water and has a mass of 1 gram. They'll extend this idea a thousand fold by balancing a liter of water opposite a kilogram of gravel on a balanced meter stick. They'll estimate the number of rice grains that fill a baby food jar, the volume of water wasted by a dripping faucet. It's all so simple, so elegant, so TOPS.
