How is a burning candle like a breathing person? Both use fuel to produce heat; both consume oxygen; both produce carbon dioxide and water vapor. Oxidation enables your students to discover underlying chemical unity among physical phenomena that appear quite different - between things that burn, things that breathe - and things that rust. They'll balance chemical equations, experimentally determine the percentage of oxygen in room air, even burn iron. Do your students need a chemistry lab to perform wonderful experiments like these?
