Open-Ended TASK CARDS

(Books #01-23)

Here is a typical reproducible Task Card page. The lab, on the upper half of the page, encourages older students to think and work like scientists, to follow their own experimental strategies, to organize data and record results in their own notebooks. Younger students can also experience success using task cards with help from adults or older students.

Teaching notes on the lower half of the page provide full support: background information, teacher demonstrations, model answers, extensions for further investigation, and materials lists with prep explanations as needed. Assessment questions are included, generally at the front of each book.

We also provide student task cards, two per page, in the back of each book for easy photocopying, with suggested options for using task cards effectively in your classroom. Supplementary pages with cutouts, graphs, or other extras are also included as needed. As with all TOPS activities, these books run on simple, inexpensive materials.

Structured ACTIVITY SHEETS

(Books #31-45, 95)

Here is a typical reproducible Activity Sheet. Step-by-step explanations with illustrations make this format easier for younger students to work independently, or for older students to progress through more advanced subject matter. Please check our by grade level index to learn which books are best for your particular age range.

A full page of teaching notes faces each activity page for easy reference. On this page you'll find background information, teacher demonstrations, model answers, extensions for further investigation, materials lists with prep explanations, everything you need to fully support the activity. Assessment questions are included, generally at the front of each book. Many titles also provide supplementary pages with cutouts, graphs, or other needed extras at the back of the book. Activities run on simple, inexpensive materials.

JOB Cards

(Programs #71-73)

Here are Job Cards from both LENTIL SCIENCE programs. These begin as full-size pages that fold into quarters, greeting card fashion. Directions to students fold to the outside, while teaching notes fold to the inside. Students stand these cards beside their Job Boxes of Lentils for easy guidance. Teachers can open the cards for a quick reference to notes and strategies that help create teachable moments.

Here is a Puzzle Page (front and back), and a Teaching Guide page from our GET A GRIP program. Students solve progressively more challenging puzzles by pouring and measuring lentils, then self-check their answers on the back of each 4.25 inch by 5.5 inch puzzle page. This allows them to advance at their own pace through the 128 puzzle sequence . We do not permit reproduction of student puzzles or the teacher’s guide in this program.
